Title of the good practice: Sanicula Co. - Curative herbs and essential oil production

Country/Region: Serbia/Paraćin

Bio-based sector: Essential oil and curative herb production, focusing on organic and sustainable practices

Description:

Sanicula Co. is a Serbian-Belgian privately owned company setting the high standard for eco-conscious curative herbs and essential oil production. Nestled in the Paraćin region, they cultivate over 224 hectares of organically certified land, meticulously extracting high-quality essential oils for the international market.

Circular bioeconomy in action: From planting herbs to distilling oils, Sanicula controls every step. Their own machinery prepares soil, cultivates fields, and harvests crops, minimizing external dependencies. They have an innovative approach to by-products. After distillation, the residual biomass is processed into bio pellets. The ash generated from burning these bio pellets is then repurposed as an organic fertilizer, completing a circular and resource-efficient production cycle.

Underlining their ecological responsibility, Sanicula embarked on the "Innovative approach to production of pellet out of curative herbs from plantations" project. This initiative focuses on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, implementing a "zero waste" concept to eliminate production waste entirely, and embracing modern ecological innovations. As being socially responsible, their operations provide valuable employment opportunities within the Paraćin region, contributing to the local economy and community well-being.

Results/lessons learnt:

Closed-loop production has minimized waste and maximized resource efficiency. Implementation of "zero waste" practices set a powerful example for responsible production, resource conservation and environmental protection. Commitment to organic farming and circular bioeconomy fosters healthy soil and reduces environmental impact, benefitting future generations.
