FonaTerm® – Granular Insulation from Textile Waste

Title: FonaTerm® – Granular Insulation from Textile Waste

Country: Slovenia

Bio-based sector: Textile (insulation)

Involved actors: Automotive manufacturers, insulation producers, construction companies, insulation installers

Description:

FonaTerm® – Granular is an innovative insulation product made from recycled textile waste, particularly from the automotive industry. The waste, primarily from seat covers and cushions, is shredded, treated with flame retardants and pest-resistant substances, and then used as insulation for buildings. It is injected into wall cavities to prevent thermal losses and improve energy efficiency, reducing the environmental impact of heating and cooling systems. By repurposing textile waste that would otherwise go to landfills, FonaTerm® supports a circular economy and promotes resource conservation. The product's high specific heat capacity and durability make it a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution for energy-efficient insulation, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions from buildings.

Results:

  • Effective reduction of textile waste sent to landfills by repurposing it into high-performance insulation materials.
  • Significant improvements in building energy efficiency, leading to reduced energy consumption for heating and cooling.
  • The scalability of the product demonstrates the potential to expand its use in different types of buildings, including residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
  • Innovative insulation techniques help optimize the use of recycled materials, minimizing waste.
