Description:
The BioINSouth project aims to help Southern Mediterranean European regions incorporate ecological limits into their regional bioeconomy strategies. By developing guidelines and digital tools based on the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) assessment framework, the project encourages the adoption of innovative methodologies to assess environmental impacts in various bio-based industrial systems. Focusing on regions lagging behind, such as Cyprus, Slovenia, Greece, and Portugal, BioINSouth works to increase regional competitiveness and innovation while contributing to the EU’s fair and green transition.
The project establishes regional HUBs to unite stakeholders—ranging from policymakers and market actors (especially SMEs) to civil society organizations—in a macro-regional BioINSouth Network, promoting collaboration and best practices. This concept will be demonstrated in eight regions and uses a transferable case-study approach for replication across other Southern European regions. The project also benefits from the experience of the BIOEAST initiative, which supports knowledge sharing and cooperation at an international level, including collaboration with Turkey and Argentina.
