Title: Mainstraming small-scale bio-based solutions in rural Europe
Acronym: MainstreamBIO
Funding source: Horizon 2020
Implementation period: 03/2022 - 02/2025
Description:
The project aims to contribute to the introduction of bio-based solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises from the agrarian and food sector in rural areas of Europe. MainstreamBIO aims to introduce small-scale biobased solutions in mass practice in 7 rural EU regions (NL, PL, DK, SE, BG, ES, IE) by creating regional multi-institutional innovation platforms (MIPs), each with a variety of raw materials, infrastructure and expertise, with the aim of jointly creating pathways for a sustainable business model in line with regional potential and political initiatives.
The project offers innovative digital tools that improve the engagement of key actors in rural areas and create sustainable value chains and business models supporting the development of the EU bioeconomy, while providing free access to a multi-stakeholder Innovation Platform, where regional stakeholders' countries with different backgrounds, experiences and interests are members and build networks and partnerships between them. The platform also provides free innovation support services and an open-to-all digital toolkit.
The project also developed report that aims to explore the regional value chains together with the available biomass, waste and residual streams in these sectors. This includes mapping available biomass and raw materials, waste and residue streams, actors, processes, resources and bioeconomic value chains in several focus regions (IE, NL, PL, DK, SE, BG and ES). The report is publicly available: https://mainstreambio-project.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/D1.3-Mapping-of-regional-bio-based-value-chains.pdf
