Title: Toplofikatsia Bansko JSC - Using renewable energy sources for centralized heat supply
Country: Bulgaria, city of Bansko
Bio-based sector: Energy
Target group: Administrative buildings (schools, kindergartens, state and municipal institutions, etc.), business entitites (hotels and enterprises)
Description:
The heating plant in the town of Bansko is the first in Bulgaria using RES (renewable energy sources) for centralized heat supply. Wood biomass is used as fuel in the plant and it is equipped with two completely independent water heating boilers (each one of them has a capacity of 5 MW). "Toplosnabdevane Bansko" JSC has a heat pipe with a length of over 5.5 km, and more than 71 subscribers using hot water for heating and DHW for business (hotels and enterprises) and domestic needs (private houses) are connected, covering a large part of municipal buildings - schools, kindergartens, cultural institutions. The municipality of Bansko is the owner of the thermal power plant, which was built by a private company, and the facility was subsequently donated to the municipality. The plant's capacity is 10 megawatts. The plant uses wood biomass as fuel, which is equipped with two completely independent water heating boilers (each one with a capacity of 5 MW).
Results/lessons learnt:
When designing and building biomass installations for the production of heat energy only, it is necessary to look for options for year-round operation of the installation and use of the produced energy. In this case, during the summer months, only hot water is used for household needs and cooling of the hotels and other subscribers. An option is to build cogeneration plants producing heat and electricity.
