Title: Svilosa and its subsidiary company Svilocell: Production of bleached sulfate cellulose from hardwood in Bulgaria

Country: Bulgaria, town of Svishtov

Bio-based sector: Forestry and wood processing

Target group: State forest enterprises, companies and individuals

Description:

Svilosa AD, through its main subsidiary Svilocell EAD, is the only producer and supplier of bleached sulfate cellulose from hardwood on a regional scale. The company has focused its attention and efforts on the quality of the products, while taking care of environmental protection.

A natural product is used as a raw material for the production of bleached sulfate cellulose - wood from local tree species: beech, oak, acacia and poplar.

The product is used in the production of tissue papers, writing and printing papers, copy papers, pigment-coated papers, surface-enhanced papers, coated corrugated board, front layer of cardboard, specialty papers, cellulose derivatives, etc.

The customer base is continuously expanding, with the company currently supplying its product to about 40 end users of  bleached hardwood kraft pulp. About 60 % of them are manufacturers of tissue papers, 15 %  are producers of writing and printing papers and the remaining 25 % are manufacturers of cellulose derivatives, packaging and specialty papers and other fiber products. 100 % of the production is intended for the market. The company's trade policy is export-oriented. As a result, more than 95 % of the produced kraft pulp gets exported. Main foreign markets are Turkey, Greece, Germany, Serbia, Romania, Egypt, Poland and Belgium.

Svilocell EAD's secondary product is soil acidity neutralizer (granulated calcium carbonate). With its high pH content, this product is very appropriate improving material for acidic soils or soils with a tendency to acidification. It is ecologically clean improving material and can be used freely both in the classic farming and in the production of bio products.

Svilosa AD has two boilers for the production of thermal energy from biomass in the pulp mill with a capacity of 88 MWth, burning wood waste, bark and black liquor. In addition, the enterprise also has a line for the production of wood briquettes/pellets.

In 2023 Svilosa completed the construction of a new plant for the combined production of heat and electricity, implementing a biomass utilization project together with a Chinese consortium headed by Jinan Boiler Group Co. The company is one of the largest manufacturers of boiler equipment in China. A modern combustion technology called "circulating fluidized bed" is used. It provides an opportunity for more complete combustion of the used fuel and reduction of harmful greenhouse gases.

Тhe new power has a capacity of 50 tons of steam and 16 MW of electricity per hour, which are used for the needs of pulp production and for sale on the free market. It provides an opportunity for more complete combustion of the fuel used and reduction of harmful greenhouse gases. As a result, emission parameters corresponding to the best European practices are achieved. The plant produces nearly 500 000 MWh of thermal energy and 128 thousand MWh of electrical energy on an annual basis. In this way, in practice, more than 200 000 tons/year of CO2 will be saved.

The Plant for utilization of waste biomass for heat and electricity generation was built in accordance with the technical standards for environmental protection, as well as with the provisions of the laws of the Republic of Bulgaria and the European Union.

The installation utilizes more than 120 000 tons/year of waste biomass in the form of bark, obtained as waste during the pulp production at Svilocell EAD. Additionally, the plant is powered by forestry waste, agricultural waste and other waste biomass, which the company purchases from external suppliers.

By implementing this project, the company becomes a final energy-independent enterprise with the ability to meet its needs for electricity and heat.
