Title: A new generation of biostimulants for agribusiness, landscaping and floriculture by Atlas Agro Science

Country: Bulgaria, Sofia, Stara Zagora

Involved actors: Regional and municipal authorities, sector agencies, institutions in the field of higher education and scientific research, various interest groups and associations, branch organizations, including NGOs, enterprises, including SMEs, agricultural producers, etc.

Description:

A solution to the critical problem of sludge storage in sewage treatment plants is proposed. Limits on their capacity are removed and their function as sources of greenhouse gas emissions, including nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4), is reduced. These gases have a significantly greater greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition, untreated sludge often contains pathogenic microorganisms, posing a potential health risk and epidemic concerns. The current approach to sludge involves landfilling or illegal dumping, with only a small fraction being used in agriculture.

The production of the new biostimulants limits greenhouse gas emissions and leads to a reduction in soil, air and water pollution. These products are in line with EU policy changes aimed at regulating circular economy principles and facilitating their use in soil and plants. These innovative products solve two problems: help, regulate and control waste disposal and protect the soil by eliminating/minimizing the use of mineral fertilizers.

Results/lessons learnt:

The application of the innovative technique and preparations for the conversion of anaerobically degraded sludge from waste leads to: improving farmers' yields by about 10 %, reducing irrigation costs by 20 % and generally achieving healthy and ecologically clean soils, reducing the acidity of the soil and increasing the efficiency of organic substances, the use of expensive mineral fertilizers is avoided, etc.
