Title: Production of energy from biogas - Nedko Nedkov Bulgaria

Country: Bulgaria, Ovcharovo village, Dobrich

Bio-based sector: Bio-energy

Target groups: Individuals and legal entities - traders

Description:

Nedko Nedkov–Ovcharovo develops the following activities: Plant breeding, Livestock breeding, Production of dairy products and Production of energy from biogas - power plant for the production of electrical energy produced by indirect use of biomass from plant and animal substances with combined production of electricity and thermal energy with a connection capacity of 1,499 kW.

The farm has two fermenters and two generators with a total capacity of 1.5 Megawatts. Biogas is produced by processing residual waste from animal husbandry (manure and uneaten feed), food production (fruit and vegetable waste, meat, fish and dairy residues, etc.) and liquid waste.

Biogas is produced from the anaerobic decomposition of organic materials in sealed digesters. For this purpose, bacteria are used that synthesize methane (in the complete absence of oxygen) from hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In order to achieve maximum methane extraction, the different types of waste must be mixed in appropriate proportions by means of special mixers and the addition of water. More than half of the resulting gas is methane, and the rest is carbon dioxide and small amounts of other impurities. The combined production of a power plant with a generator converts methane into electricity and heat. Biogas is completely ecological and CO2-neutral.

Microorganisms involved in fermentation reactions are some of the most ancient living organisms on earth, called "archaebacteria" and appeared long before the period in which photosynthesis began.

Benefits of producting biogas:

  • Raw material for obtaining biogas can be any kind of organic waste, and the production of biogas can be carried out directly at the source of this waste.
  • Digestibility rate – more than 80 % of the organic composition is converted into fuel (biogas).
  • It reduces the number of disease-causing organisms during waste processing.
  • The product obtained after fermentation can be used in soil treatment - it is enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus and reduces the cost of mineral fertilizers, it has no smell, it can be used before sowing or during the growing season, because it is gentle and does not damage the crops.
  • It has a very high octane number and is suitable as a fuel for car engines.
  • Undeniable ecological effect - helps to preserve energy- yielding minerals and is a renewable energy source. There is so little carbon dioxide released during the process that it is immediately absorbed by plants during photosynthesis.
