Industrial installation for biological waste treatment "Khan Bogrov"

Title: Industrial installation for biological waste treatment "Khan Bogrov"

Country: Bulgaria, the "Khan Bogrov" site located in the Malo Livade area, village of Gorni Bogrov, Kremikovtsi district, Stolichna municipality

Bio-based sector: Environment, waste, renewable resources

Involved actors: Regional and local institutions, administrative buildings (schools, kindergartens, state and municipal institutions, etc.), business entities (hotels and enterprises), companies and individuals

Description:

Industrial installation for biological waste treatment "Khan Bogrov" was established to perform the following activities:

  1. Reception and processing of municipal waste (up to 410,000 tons/year), which must be treated in order to obtain a minimum amount of waste for disposal by landfill;
  2. Recovery of materials for recycling;
  3. Production of fractions of modified fuels (RDF) according to an agreed specification;
  4. Production of a product (compost) that can be used in landscaping or forestry, according to an agreed specification;
  5. Processing and treatment by mechanical and biological methods (separation) of biowaste (organic waste) and production of biogas;
  6. Processing and treatment by mechanical and biological methods of separately collected green waste from gardens, parks, landscape gardening and others.

Commissioned in 2014. The facility operates as two separate technological lines:

  1. Line for the treatment of separately collected biowaste from parks and gardens /green waste/ - After preliminary mechanical treatment aimed at removing impurities and achieving a suitable structure, the prepared material is loaded into compost cells. There, the intensive composting phase takes place. The technological control of this phase is fully automated. After a technologically determined dwell time in the compost tunnels, the material is taken out to the maturation zone. The processes in this zone last between 6 and 8 weeks. After the maturation is completed, the compost is sieved with a drum screen, as a result of which a fine and coarse fraction of the finished product is separated.
  2. Line for the treatment of separately collected food biowaste - Separately collected food biowaste is subject to preliminary treatment in two zones, and during mechanical treatment the impurities are separated. The organic material is processed until a suspension is obtained, which is discharged into a buffer tank. The fermentation process is carried out in a wet bioreactor in a mesophilic mode of operation. As a result, biogas and a partially stabilized fermentation product are obtained. The biogas system collects and analyzes the resulting biogas. After its purification and drying, it enters cogenerators, where it is converted into electrical and thermal energy.

Results/lessons learnt:

  • The amount of treated biowaste by 30.09.2020 is 15,500 tons (food waste 6,451 tons and green waste 9,049 tons);
  • The amount of compost produced by 30.09.2020 is 8,586 tons, which is 1,239 tons more than the same period in 2019;
  • Amount of energy produced 2,238 MWh of electricity (397 MWh more than the same period in 2019).
  • For the period January - December 2021 the approximate amount of electricity produced and sold at the BioPP "Khan Bogrov" is 1,081 MWh.
  • In 2023, 1,862 MWh of electricity from biomass was produced at the BioPP "Khan Bogrov".
  • A biomass center is to be built with pellet production line, including the necessary infrastructure for the production of class AI wood pellets, wood chips and mulch, a firewood distribution center, storage areas and finished products, an administrative building, a rooftop photovoltaic installation, and a charging station for electric vehicles.
