Scalable Technologies for Bio Urban Waste Recovery

Title of the project: Scalable Technologies for Bio Urban Waste  Recovery

Acronym: SCALIBUR

Funding source: Horizon 2020

Implementation period: 2018 - 2022

Stakeholders involved: All stakeholders along the value chain – from waste generators to collectors and processors – to support the integration of innovative biowaste management practices in three pilot cities. In each of the pilot cities SCALIBUR partners have identified ‘local champions’ – inspired citizens, start-ups, collectives and small businesses that are highly committed to support their cities and fellow citizens in adopting circular, sustainable approaches and lifestyles (e.g. videos – Get to know the local champions in Albano Laziale).

Bio-based sector: Biowaste. SCALIBUR demonstrated a range of innovative technologies to produce high value-added products, such as bioplastics and biopesticides.

Description:

The EU-funded SCALIBUR project formed a partnership of end users to transform urban biowaste into value-added biomaterial products. The project was carried out in the municipalities of Madrid (Spain), Albano Laziale (Italy) and Kozani (Greece). SCALIBUR introduced innovative systems and technologies and proposed the transformation of waste from hotels, restaurants and catering into proteins, lipids and chitin from insect rearing and the organic part of municipal solid waste into biopesticides and bioplastics.
