Citizen dialogue on bioeconomy

Title: Citizen dialogue on bioeconomy

Country: Germany

Stakeholders involved: Citiziens, Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, Federal Agency for Nature Conservation

Description:

NABU (Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union) provided technical support for the communication project, which was funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The "National Bioeconomy Strategy" adopted at the beginning of 2020 presents the concept of the bioeconomy as a modern and efficient alternative to the fossil-based economy. It is seen as a solution to global challenges such as advancing climate change, high resource consumption and unchecked biodiversity loss. Thanks to efficiency and production increases as well as innovative materials, the transformation towards a new raw material base and bio-based circular economy should succeed. However, technological innovations alone will not be enough to solve the many conflicting goals for a viable and sustainable bioeconomy. Water, land and soil are limited resources and are already heavily overused today.

Four interactive workshops and an online dialogue lasting several weeks were conducted as part of the project. The participants got to know bioeconomy products, learned about the theoretical background of the bioeconomy concept and, based on this, discussed a high-tech and a sufficiency-oriented bioeconomy draft for the future. The most important findings from the project were published in a BfN (Federal Agency for Nature Conservation) script.

The BfN script outlines the theoretical foundations, documents the process and the results of the citizens' dialogue and provides an outlook on the contribution of the bioeconomy to a socio-ecological transformation.
